Mazda's MX-30 electric crossover — the company's first-ever electric car — is an odd beast. In size and shape, it's somewhere between a small family SUV and a sporty hatchback. But it doesn't have a particularly sporty performance, and its battery is just too small for longer rides.

Here's the rundown: The Mazda MX-30's electric powertrain has an output of 144HP, which will get you from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in about 9.7 seconds. Its 35.5kWh battery, however, won't get you very far; its 124-mile WLTP range is so puny that Mazda doesn't even mention it in its latest press materials for the car.

The car has been on sale in Europe for a while, and now it's coming to the U.S., but none of the above is any different. Sure, the DC fast charging that can charge the battery to 80 percent within 36 minutes helps, as does the partnership with ChargePoint to offer charging solutions in the U.S., but doesn't change the fact that nowadays, electric cars of this size have more range.

"The battery-powered MX-30 will begin the introduction of additional electrified models, including a series plug-in hybrid with a rotary generator for MX-30, a plug-in hybrid for our new large platform, and a traditional hybrid for our new American-made crossover,” Mazda's North American president Jeff Guyton said in a statement.

In accordance with Mazda's eco-friendly approach to building this car, you'll find details such as cork on the door grips and the "floating" center console. Other details include an electronic shifter, a seven inch touchscreen (thankfully, climate control is operated via "tactile" push buttons, and shortcut buttons to operate the Mazda Connect infotainment system.

In terms of safety, the MX-30 gets Mazda's enhanced i-Activsense tech, as well as a strengthened body that protects the battery. Oh, and the fact that the battery is so small is reflected in the car's spacious interior and generous boot for its size.

Kia has unveiled the EV6 with images of the car's exterior and interior, ahead of its premiere later this month. The company calls the EV6 its first "dedicated battery electric vehicle," meaning its the first car in Kia's lineup to be electric-only (unlike, say, the Kia Niro, which also comes as hybrid).

The company saved the details on the EV6's specifications for the March launch. We know, however, that the EV6 was designed under Kia's new "Opposites United" design philosophy, which looks at contrasts in nature and humanity for inspiration.

“With EV6 we aimed to create a distinctive, impactful design by using a combination of sophisticated, high-tech features on pure and rich volumes, while providing a unique space as a futuristic EV," said Karim Habib, Kia's senior vice president and head of global design center, in a statement.

The EV6 is based on Hyundai Motor Group's new Electric-Global Modular Platform or E-GMP, which is the company's foundation for electric vehicles going forward. Generally, cars based on E-GMP can provide range of more than 500 kilometres (311 miles) on one charge, and accelerate from zero to 100 kph (62 mph) in less than 3.5 seconds, with a top speed of 260 kph (162 mph). These are top figures for the platform; the EV6 in particular may have different specs.

Canoo is known for its funky looking electric vehicles and its newest pickup truck keeps the pod aesthetic going. The smooshed box of a truck was unveiled Wednesday evening ahead of an official reveal at the Motor Press Guild’s Virtual Media Day on Thursday. Canoo will open pre-orders in the coming months and the electric truck is expected to arrive by 2023.

The Los Angeles-based startup plans to offer different electric vehicle platforms as part of a subscription-based business model with a monthly fee. Like the other two Canoo vehicles already out, the electric truck is very modular.

While the truck bed is only 6 feet long it can be extended, features pull-out side sections, and an optional roof rack for more cargo space. The bed opens up and converts the vehicle into a camping-friendly shell. A front cargo space can hold tools, as can drawers near the back wheel bed. So while it looks (and is) pretty tiny at only 184 inches long, it can hold plenty of gear and equipment. Tesla's Cybertruck was too large for many in its initial incarnation at more than 230 inches long. The Ford F-150, the best-selling vehicle in the U.S., spills out up to 250 inches.

The mini truck will have more than 200 miles of range on a single charge with either one or two electric motors, depending on configuration choices. Being Mazda's first electric car (if you don't count prototypes from the 1970s), the MX-30 feels like a bit of a showcase for what's coming in the future.

Pricing and subscription plans, along with more details about its battery, weren't immediately revealed. But Canoo's whole thing is that its vehicles are built on a multi-purpose platform. Thanks to its flat, thin battery platform, called a "skateboard," the electric part of the vehicle takes up less space. That leaves more room to make each vehicle as customizable as possible. So far Canoo has its original "lifestyle" pod-van and a $33,000 delivery van. There's a waiting list to get subscription access to the pod vehicles.
