On Wednesday, the Serum Institute in a statement said that its vaccines will be the most affordable in comparison to imported vaccines that cost roughly between Rs 750 to Rs 1,500 per shot. It also said, "Furthermore, owing to the complexity, and urgency of the situation it is challenging to supply it independently to each corporate entity,".
"We would urge all corporate and private individuals to access the vaccines through the state facilitated machinery and private health systems." it added.
SII will offer 50% of its vaccines to the Indian government for its vaccination drive and the other 50% to State governments and private hospitals. Great, but what does that mean for citizens? Going by the price of procurement, getting a vaccine from a central government facility will be the cheapest. Currently, vaccines are free at government hospitals while private hospitals can charge up to Rs 250 per shot. There are no changes to the market price announced so far. That being said, we do know that the third phase of India's vaccination drive has roped in the private sector. So it remains to be seen what it will cost to the average citizen.
In a major update, it was announced on Monday that the COVID-19 vaccination will be available to everyone above the age of 18 starting from May 1. This is the next step after the initial phases that made vaccines available for healthcare workers and those above the age of 45. The announcement comes amidst growing coronavirus cases as India has been hit by the second wave of the pandemic.
After vaccines were made available in two initial phases, India is ramping up the pace by opening up the vaccination drive for citizens above the age of 18. The immunisation drive was earlier limited to persons above the age of 45. On Monday, the Centre announced that COVID-19 vaccination will be available to everyone above the age of 18 starting from May 1.
The announcement comes as a part of a "liberalised and accelerated Phase 3 strategy of COVID-19 vaccination" as per a Hindustan Times report. The decision came after Prime Minister's Narendra Modi's meeting with various stakeholders. “India has been following a dynamic mapping model based on the availability of vaccines & coverage of vulnerable priority groups to take decisions of when to open up vaccinations to other age groups,” read the Health Ministry’s statement. The first phase of vaccinations in India started on January 16 this year for health care and frontline workers. In the second phase initiated on March 1 and April 1, those above 45 years of age were eligible to get the jab.
The Phase 3 vaccination drive will follow the same roll-out strategy as before - COVID-19 vaccines will be available free of cost at government hospitals and centres while private hospitals can offer vaccines at a self-set, "transparently" declared cost. Vaccine manufacturers will supply 50% doses to the government while the rest will be released to state governments and the open market. So the key developments include opening up the age category and roping in the private sector. “In its Phase-III, the National Vaccine Strategy aims at liberalised vaccine pricing and scaling up of vaccine coverage. This would augment vaccine production as well as availability, incentivising vaccine manufacturers to rapidly ramp up their production as well as attract new vaccine manufacturers, domestic and international,” says the Health Ministry.
Phase 3 of vaccination in India will begin on May 1. Here's how you can sign up for the vaccine on the CoWin app: Visit the CoWin website at - cowin.gov.in Enter your mobile number or Aadhaar number You will receive an OTP on your mobile number Register and schedule your preferred date and time Get your COVID-19 vaccination You will receive a reference ID through which you can get your vaccination certificate. This much-awaited move comes amidst the second wave of the pandemic. India has recorded a daily surge of over 200,000 COVID-19 cases which is the highest in the country so far. There is a shortage of hospital beds, oxygen and medicines. To curb the rising cases, regions including Maharashtra and New Delhi have implemented new lockdown rules. While the crisis overwhelms the healthcare system, the BJP has been holding large election rallies and public gatherings for days. And have only taken the decision to cancel gatherings in West Bengal today as per The Indian Express reports. Adding to the burgeoning crisis, the Kumbh Mela, a COVID-19 superspreader was allowed to take place. The result is India making it to the second spot on the worst coronavirus outbreak list. At the time of writing this article, the total cases in India stand at 15,321,089.
